Dear Families and Staff:
As we prepare for Thanksgiving, your high school principals want to express our gratitude for your partnership in keeping our students healthy and learning this school year. COVID-19 has greatly affected the operation of our schools in many ways, yet our students are progressing academically and engaging in new ways.
In the past, athletic and artistic events gave our community the opportunity to see the strengths, artistic ability, and resilience of our students. However, concerns for the safety of our students, coaches, and community forces school division leaders to make the difficult decision to cancel our winter sports season this year.
The rising number of COVID-19 cases causes significant concern for safety. Many of our winter sports are contested in gyms, indoor tracks, and aquatic centers where, even with spectator limitations and other mitigation strategies, we will struggle to maintain social distancing, the use of face coverings, and other guidelines from the governor.
We know that athletics and activities are important to student growth. If health metrics improve, we hope to support participation in other sports seasons and activities such as debate, forensics, and one-act plays. We will continue to communicate with you regularly as decisions about these activities are made. In the meantime, we look forward to the time when the current health situation improves, and we are able to welcome high school students back to our school buildings, and the Eagles, Lions, and Rams onto their fields.
A staff member at Warhill High School has reported a positive COVID-19 test. Based on the initial contact assessment, the gym area is closed. Out of an abundance of caution, conditioning for all student athletes is cancelled for the next two weeks.
The health department has been contacted. If it is determined that any individuals came in close contact with the staff member (less than 6 feet for more than 15 minutes within 24 hours), they will be notified directly by the health department.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause for our student athletes. Again, the temporary cancellation of conditioning is a precaution only. The health and safety of our students and staff is and will remain our priority.
Fall Conditioning for some teams will begin on Monday, Nov. 9. Reach out to Head Coach of the Fall Sport to get details on when, where and time of conditioning. Reminder, that the following must be completed before participation in conditioning sessions: 1). VHSL Physical form dated after May 1, 2020; 2). Online Athletic Registration must be complete, and 3). COVID-19 Waiver form must be completed. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the Athletic Department at 757-565-9121.
If you are interested in conditioning for Indoor Track, please contact Kameron Schaefer at firstname.lastname@example.org for specific Indoor Track information.
